Greetings Fishing Enthusiast:
May I take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Melvin Forsyth Jr. and I own and operate Alaskan Rivers & Seas Fishing Guides in Soldotna, Alaska. I have lived in Soldotna and fished the waters in this area since 1975 and have been in the guide business since 1988. I offer complete packages; standard packages or custom packages which can be tailored to meet your exact wishes.
We fish the Kenai River for Chinook (King) Salmon, Coho (Silver) Salmon, and Pink Salmon. In September and upon request, a combination package including Silver Salmon, Rainbow Trout, and Dolly Varden Char is available. We also fish Cook Inlet (salt water) for Halibut.
King Salmon in the Kenai River are of world record size. The "All Tackle" world record King Salmon weighing 97 lbs. 4 oz. was caught from the Kenai River on May 17, 1985. Four of the five largest King Salmon caught on rod & reel were caught in the Kenai River. These fish all weighed over 90 lbs. "Kings" in the Kenai River average 30 lbs. to 45 lbs. and 50 lbs. is common. Fish of 60 lbs. will not raise undo attention and "Kings" in the 70 lbs. class are not uncommon.
Silver Salmon in the Kenai River are beautiful, acrobatic fish that average 10 lbs. to 15 lbs. with fish weighing 17 lbs. to 18 lbs. being reasonably common. "Silvers" weighing 20 lbs. are caught every year and they have been caught as large as 22 lbs. plus.
Pink Salmon are the smallest member of the Salmon family. What they lack in size, they make up in sheer numbers. No one knows how many "Pinks" enter the Kenai River, but they surely number in the hundreds of thousands if not a million or more. This is definitely a fishery for the "small" members of your family as well as someone who is interested in catching a large number of fish.
The "combo" package in September is exactly that. The daily catch is a mixed bag of Silver Salmon, Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden Char. The Rainbows in this part of river have been caught weighing over 20 lbs. and the Dolly Varden will tip the scales at 10 lbs. to 12 lbs.
Our Halibut trips in Cook Inlet are the closest to a "sure thing" that I know of in fishing. The daily limit is two (2) fish per person regardless of size. It is an unusual day that anyone returns to shore without their limit. The only question is "how big" -- halibut of over 400 lbs. are caught every year. The "average" fish probably weighs 40 lbs. to 50 lbs. but there are many over 100 lbs. caught. Fish of 150 lbs. to 200 lbs. do not attract undo attention.
